When advertising online with Google Ads (formerly known as AdWords), it’s not enough to be told about the most common or popular banner ad sizes – as a business, you need to know which sizes perform the best.

If you only have the resources to produce a small set of banners, it’s important that you use the banner ad dimensions that have a proven track record for success.

Below is my tried and tested list, which aligns with the top-performing ad sizes according to Google, and my first point of reference whenever I’m setting up campaigns on Google’s Display Network. You’ll notice that these are mostly wide banner ads, and if positioned well, these can increase your earnings significantly.

If your product or service is better advertised through a mobile device, such as driving mobile app downloads, these are the banner sizes that have been proven to drive better performance (width by height in pixels):

  • 300 x 250 – Medium Rectangle
  • 320 x 100 – Large Mobile Banner
  • 320 x 50 – Mobile Leaderboard
  • 250 x 250 – Square Ad
  • 200 x 200 – Small Square Ad

A Cost-Effective Combination

The two most successful sizes, the Medium Rectangle (300 x 250) and the Large Rectangle (336 x 280) are also an affordable combination from a creative point of view.

If you pay to have the Large Rectangle creative designed for you, you can easily resize it down to the Medium Rectangle (300 x 250) without any distortion, as they share the same scalable dimensions.

Get The Skinny On Why Wider Is Better

Wider ad sizes have a better performance compared to tall, skinny banner dimensions because they are in a ‘reader friendly’ format. We tend to absorb information several words at a time, in a single glance, and wider ads comfortably fit more words on a line. Narrower ads cause our eyes to continuously travel back down to a new line, interrupting the reading experience.
